Italy, 1956. On the picturesque island of Amatrello, the peculiar custom has developed that the fathers determine the first dates of their daughters on the basis of presented gifts. It is not uncommon for such a first date to be followed by marriage, and the constant struggle among the young men of the village to find the best gift idea is omnipresent. The 18-year-old Marcello (Francesco Mistichelli), himself the son of a relationship that was concluded in this way and failed, thinks little, if anything, of this tradition.... Until he catches sight of the enchanting Elena (Elena Cucci) for the first time.
